Roy's Review: Kairos 4tet - at the Chapel. By: Roy Stevens - Mon, June 6, 2011 Last year when the Kairos 4tet released their first album “Kairos Moments” it not only pleased the critics but appealed to a wider audience of jazz followers, resulting in numerous invitations to the summer festival circuit. On Sunday evening they appeared at the Chapel at No.1, Shakespeare Street it being the final gig of their UK tour to promote the second album “Statement of Intent”. The whole repertoire consisted of thoughtful compositions by the leader/saxophonist Adam Waldmann which have a strong and melodic clarity complementing his own relaxed and understated playing. Ivo Neame on keyboard and Jasper Hoiby on bass had an instant rapport, not really surprising as they are both members of the groundbreaking band Phronesis. Jon Scott on drums completed this talented quartet, a percussionist with an amazingly propulsive work-rate coupled with a unique vision that ensures he’s always up there with the pace. It was interesting to talk to members of the audience afterwards about the progress of this young band. Views were equally divided between those who preferred the more ensemble and lyrical approach of the first album and those who favoured the freedom of the extended solos on the second. What is patently clear is that this band is not standing still and has made an enormous impact in a very short time. Many of us cannot wait for album number three. Sunday June 12th 2011 sees the reappearance at at No.1 Shakespeare Street in The Chapel of the West Country band, Pedalmania which features John Paul Gard on the Hammond organ, Ben Waghorn on reeds and Eddie John on drums. A capacity audience is anticipated for this popular trio.
