Roy's Review: Chris Bowden and Edgar Macias Trio at the Chapel.. By: Roy Stevens - Mon, 18 July 2011 It is no secret that saxophonist Chris Bowden has not enjoyed the best of health in recent times, so his return to Stratford Jazz after an absence of two years was eagerly awaited. Appearing on Sunday evening at The Chapel at No.1 Shakespeare Street with an excellent trio led by Venezuelan pianist Edgar Macias it was a though he had never been away when he delivered a performance of the most exhilarating jazz. Chris set the tone for the evening with the opening number, Cole Porter’s All of me, which was delivered in a high speed blistering fashion reminiscent of the raw power of Michael Brecker. In Edgar Macias Chris has the perfect foil, they combine with an understanding that shows the deep respect that they have for each other. Edgar has the knack of seamlessly adjusting the pace of a number with his solo work which flows from intricate melodic patterns to the rumbustious in the space of a few bars. Completing this fine outfit was Bill Coleman on bass and Miles Levin on drums, who showed why they are such firm favourites with the Stratford Jazz fans by not only providing a solid swinging beat but also contributing some exemplary solos. It is always a pleasure to experience a gig when the players get just as much of a thrill as the punters and this was certainly the case on Sunday. Jazz standards from Monk, Parker et al with some Latin American thrown in made up the varied repertoire for the evening which led to an evening of great fun. Everyone was delighted to see Chris return in a relaxed fashion and produce the quality of jazz we have come to expect from him. His improvisations were as edgy and as breathtaking as ever - we do not wish to wait another two years for a return!
